Let’s visit south texas. I’m going to be honest: I’ve been to a lot of places in Texas, but there’s one that has always eluded me. It’s south Texas, and it’s where most people go to get away from the hustle and bustle of life in San Antonio or Austin. But why would anyone want to get away from the fun? Because south Texas is truly beautiful, and you can find some amazing places there that you might not expect! So here are my personal favorite things about South Texas—along with some recommendations for what else you should check out while you’re there.
Best Places to Visit in South Texas
King William Historic District
The King William Historic District is the oldest neighborhood in San Antonio, Texas. It was established in 1853 and was originally known as El Nacimiento de la Villa de San Fernando Rey de España del Rio Grande del Norte (the birthplace of the town of San Fernando Rey of Spain on the banks of the Rio Grande). The district is filled with many historically significant buildings, including homes and businesses from the 19th century. There are also several restaurants and shops that you can visit while you’re there.
The neighborhood hosts an annual Fiesta celebration every spring! It’s a great place for families who want to learn more about Southwestern culture or want to try some delicious Tex-Mex cuisine!
San Antonio River Walk
The San Antonio River Walk is a beautiful, serene oasis in the middle of the city. The history of this man-made attraction dates back to 1691, when Indian Trading Paths were first built through what was then known as La Villa de San Fernando de Béxar. The river itself was dammed up in 1731 and remains so today—a rare feat for an urban waterway. Today, however, the San Antonio River Walk has become an iconic symbol of South Texas life and culture and attracts millions of visitors every year.

South Padre Island
South Padre Island is a great place to visit. It’s only a few hours away from San Antonio and Houston, so it’s easy to get there by car or plane. There are many fun things to do here, including swimming in the ocean or playing on the beach, shopping at local stores and restaurants, watching sports games at one of the many sports bars on South Padre Island (or even attending them in person!), going to concerts at South Padre Amphitheater (the largest outdoor concert venue in Texas), and visiting Sea Turtle Inc., which protects endangered sea turtles while they lay eggs on Texas beaches.

La Villita Historic Art Village
La Villita is a historic art village in San Antonio, Texas. It is located in the King William Historic District and is the third-oldest neighborhood in San Antonio. The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places on December 19, 1979.
The Great Market Hall is located on La Villita Plaza, which features an outdoor market with various shops and restaurants showcasing local crafts such as jewelry and furniture, as well as artwork from local artists. In addition to shopping at La Villita, you can also enjoy live music or go for a stroll through this charming area during your visit to San Antonio.

The Alamo
The Alamo is the most popular tourist attraction in San Antonio, and it’s easy to see why. The Alamo was originally a Spanish mission founded in 1718, and later used as a fort by the Mexican Army during their siege of the city. Today, it’s part of San Antonio Missions National Historical Park which includes four other historic sites: Mission Concepción, Mission San José y San Miguel de Aguayo (also known as La Misión del Espíritu Santo), Mission San Juan Capistrano and Presidio La Bahía del Espíritu Santo de Zúñiga (also known as Fortín Conde de Galve).
